The Bronze Serpent

Easter 2021 – the whole world is crazy about a so-called pandemic.
Of course, a lot is going on in my mind about this topic too. Today I want to share some thoughts about this time, we live in.

There are lots of theories about our time, out there and some of them even make some sense. Watching what is going on in this world, the story of the Bronze Serpent came to my mind. As we read, the people of Israel were on their way from Egypt to their promised Land. God was taking care of them, providing them with food and water in the wilderness. Even during the day, he covered the sky with a cloud, so they didn’t have to walk in the heat of the desert.

We can say, they might have had a hard journey. Walking in the desert and wilderness is not fun, of course. But God provided them with all necessary things and they had everything they needed. God even destroyed their enemies, who didn’t want to let them pass on their journey. God was fighting their battles for them. Of course, they had to take their weapons and get out to the battle, but how many times do we read how God destroyed their enemies, where Israel didn’t have to do anything, just watching.

But it was not enough for Israel, they started complaining and speaking against the Lord, saying they would have preferred to be slaves in Egypt, treated very badly, but have their food which they had in the slavery. After all, they went through and all the miracles all of them have seen on their way, they still found a reason to complain.

Let’s read the story in Numbers 21: 4-9

From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.”
Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us”.
So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”
So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

In this very short story, we even see a lot of parallels in our time. As we live our lives, especially as Christians, we have everything we need. The Lord provides for us, he cares about his people, as he did in the wilderness with Israel. How many battles does God with for us and sometimes we don’t even know? We are basically in the same story, as Jesus said, we are not from this world, we are just in this world (for a reason). God called us out from sin, which is referring to Egypt, and he is leading us through this wilderness here to our promised land.

Easter reminds us about this precious gift, the Lord gave us. His only Son died for our sins on the cross. With that, Jesus gave us the opportunity to come directly to him in prayers and talk to him.
We got everything we need to make it through this world and reach our destination, the promised land.

But what happened with all these so-called Christians? How often do we find ourselves complaining about things, which mostly don’t even matter? Or even worse, how many Christians turn away from God again and “go back to Egypt” in their sinner’s life?

Well, I believe God has sent us and the whole of humanity some “serpents” to remind us of something. Since God is always in control, this situation is no accident and God used some people to create a disease and spread it all over the world. So no one can escape or hide anywhere and it affects everyone.

What’s the solution?

What do we do about this situation? Do we keep arguing, complaining, and sinning or are we smart enough to realize that God wants to tell us something?
The first lockdowns happened exactly during Easter time 2020 and some were extended. Now we are one year further, Easter 2021 and the situation did not really change. In a few countries, it’s getting less, in others, it’s getting worse. Easter reminds us every year, that Jesus died for our sins and he has risen. He destroyed Satan, the serpent.

Israel realized, they have sinned against God and went to Moses to ask him to pray for them and their sins. Moses did and God gave him instructions on what to do.
God did not remove the serpents, he left them there and they kept biting the people. But God told them, if they watch at the serpent, which Moses made, and keep their faith and trust in the Lord, they will not die. In our time we have Jesus, who was crucified and died on the cross for our sins. If we watch at him and confess our sins, stay faithful to him, we will live – that’s his promise, and as we know his word is true.

Most people don’t even want to admit that they are sinners and it seems the situation is not serious enough to make them start thinking and turning back to God. People are still feeling great in their wicked and sinful life. How many deaths and how long might it take for people to wake up. But instead, they turn to even more evil people and look for help there. People, which are obviously worshiping Satan, are called to help humanity, really?

Satan is not stupid, and he is much longer on this planet than we are. He has much more experience to deceive people than we think. If we watch closely, he is quite successful and most leaders of the countries bow down and accept the solution presented by Satan. They even try to sell Satan’s product to everyone and even so-called Christians fall into this trap.

But God keeps watching and lets people just do, and people keep dying. Sometimes it even seems God is giving up on these wicked people and let them get in real serious trouble. The question is, when are the people, especially Christians starting to wake up in masses and pray to God and asking for forgiveness of their sins. When are the people going to stop with their wicked lives and turn back to God?
But instead, we see only fraud, crime, lies, and all kinds of sins everywhere. How long shall this be going on? How many death will it take?

The bible teaches us where the real solutions are, what will it take for people to get smart and turn back to God?
What humanity needs, more than ever before, is Jesus.
God says to turn away from the wicked ways and repent, then he will heal and bless the people.
God is waiting, it’s all up to us and especially up to all the Christians and all the fake Christians.
